Photographer, Mentor, and Beloved Cousin
This page is dedicated to my cousin, Victor B. Caruana. He was a talented photographer from Mosta, Malta, and a true mentor in every sense. His passion for photography began early in life and inspired everyone who knew him.
Victor was born on February 23, 1944, in the historic town of Mosta. At the age of 11, he received his first Kodak Brownie camera, which ignited his lifelong fascination with capturing moments through the lens. By the time he was 16, he had built his own darkroom and started developing his film, guided by Johnson's Photography Book. Even while pursuing his studies, he devoted all his free time to refining his craft.
At 18, Victor photographed his first wedding when a friend fell ill. That day marked the beginning of his journey as a professional photographer. Over the years, his portfolio included weddings, social events, sports, and reportage photography for local clubs and newspapers. Although he was a teacher by profession, photography remained his true calling. He spent weekends and holidays immersed in his art, building a reputation that extended beyond Malta. His work was featured in numerous local and international exhibitions, and he had the honor of hosting solo shows. His stunning photographs appeared in books, magazines, and newspapers, celebrated for their artistry and authenticity.
Victor loved the natural beauty of Malta, which he referred to as his "Island of Sunshine." He excelled at capturing landscapes and had a particular talent for photographing fireworks displays, translating light and motion into timeless images. In 2006, he embraced digital photography, documenting Malta's evolving story through a modern lens. In 2017, the city of Mosta recognized Victor for his lifelong dedication and valuable contributions to the community.
I was fortunate to spend time with him during my visit to Malta in 2017. He generously shared his knowledge, techniques, passion, and joy—moments I will always treasure. Learning from Victor was a privilege that left a lasting impact on me.
On May 30, 2018, Victor passed away suddenly from a heart attack. His unexpected departure was a profound loss for all who knew him. Yet, his legacy lives on—in the memories he captured, the stories he told through his lens, and the hearts of those he mentored and inspired.
May he rest in peace, forever remembered for his remarkable eye, kind spirit, and the love he shared through every photograph.
